As you might expect, artists are creative people who work from their own individual training, standards and inspiration. They all work differently. Some may use photographs or direct observations, preliminary drawings or color sketches, full-scale studies or a series of small notations.
There are many options, which is why working with our associates can be so beneficial. They are very helpful when it comes to matching clients with artists they are comfortable with and who can work in the set time frame.
Some of our artists prefer to meet clients in their homes so they can observe, make drawings, take photographs and create color studies. Others will ask clients to come to their studios where they have more control over light, tools like paints and easels and a selection of appropriate backgrounds and furniture.
Most artists will take many photographs to supplement their drawings and color studies because it is difficult for people to be available for the number of sittings required to complete a portrait. The artists might also ask to borrow the subject’s dress or suit so they can fill in details when the person is not available to pose.
Sales associates are also helpful in establishing a time schedule for the portrait commission and reminding both the client and the artist of their appointments. If problems arise, the agent will also clarify and resolve those issues so the commission is completed to everyone’s satisfaction.
Even after a portrait is finished, associates are available to consult about framing, hanging and lighting of the portrait.
